I found each sequel about half as good as the book before it.
I think Dune Messiah is the best book in the series.
I read all the sequels but only liked the first couple, but Dune is by far the best..
Can you read Dune as a stand alone?
Like people said though, you can absolutely just read Dune by itself and enjoy it for the masterpiece it is. The next five books expand on the mythology and tell the story thousands of years on into the future. Either way, don’t read the books by Herbert’s son and Anderson.
