Is Dune series worth reading?
Dune Messiah is definitely worth reading, it closes Paul’s character arc.
Children of Dune was pushing things I thought, although had good moments (but the bloke being the strongest rankled with me).
God-Emperor of Dune was hard going and where I stopped with no regrets..
Should I read all 6 Dune books?
yes, read all of the originals written by Frank Herbert – and then stop. The series as a whole is MUCH more than the sum of its parts, although each book individually is fantastic as well.
Which Dune novel is the best?
Dune Messiah and Children of DuneDune is by far the best book in the series. Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are decent, but there’s a huge drop in quality from God Emperor of Dune through Chapterhouse: Dune.
Is Dune Messiah as good as Dune?
Messiah is just as good as Dune, but in a different genre. Instead of Dunes adventure it’s a tragedy. I’m on Children now and I found Messiah very disappointing, but Children is fantastic.

Should I read the appendix of Dune first?
For Dune (and for LotR, which also has substantial Appendices), I’d definitely read the Appendix after – there’s nothing in there you need to know to enjoy the book.
Are the Dune sequels worth it?
Yes and no. If you’re looking for more “Dune” stop there and pretend there were never any sequels. This is the advice I wish I was given. If you’re looking for something tonally different but still good in a different way read through God Emperor.
Is Dune a hard book to read?
Dune isn’t a difficult read. … Unfortunately, while Dune is a great book, with lots of interesting ideas and characters, the sequels seem to go steadily downhill, as if Herbert was writing them because he knew they would sell, but not putting much thought into them. Definitely read Dune.
Is dune about Islam?
Dune is the second film adaptation of the popular 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. … A quick look at Frank Herbert’s appendix to Dune, “the Religion of Dune”, reveals that of the “ten ancient teachings”, half are overtly Islamic.
Can you just read the first dune book?
As previously mentioned, the first is perfectly fine to read on its own. I would actually advise against reading the other books because a central theme of Herbert’s series is the destruction and degradation of key protagonists, which is upsetting if you’ve been made to like them. Dune is an excellent standalone novel.
